Transformers Meets Hellboy

Hi,

So for this weekend I took my little brother and cousin to go see a movie because they had wanted to see this certain movie for a while. Now I had thought that I had escaped this one because I wasn’t so keen to see it in theaters but hey it’s been a while since I went to the theater, so I was excited to go to see a movie in general. It’s also really nice to just be reviewing just one movie this time with all the multi-reviews I’ve been doing. I think it’s better that I get to pay more attention to the review and links instead of trying to condense it so it won’t be too long.

Pacific Rim (2013)

pacific_rim_ver12_xlg

Director: Guillermo del Toro

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: After a rift in the Pacific Ocean, a war between mankind and monsters rages and as the end nears humanity takes one last desperate attempt to defend themselves.

The Review: Now I am a fan of Guillermo del Toro and enjoy watching his film like Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, however when I first saw the preview to this movie I wasn’t so interested in it but I was invited to the movies and chaperone my brother and cousin. The beginning explains how the world got to where it was and the rest of the plot was simple win the war and destroy the monsters. So going in I didn’t expect much.

pacific-rim-charlie-hunnam-rinko-kikuchi

I found though that the premise was an interesting concept how the machines were operated which was to link two human minds and the robot together in something that they call the drift, which is composed of memories and thoughts so you have to be compatible to operate the robot. Out of that concept arises the story of the movie, which was Charlie Hunnam’s character story in finding a new drift compatible part after the tragic death of his last. Now the story was simple and interesting and the dialogue was average, passable but it did have some cheesiness in some of it, not too bad though, that was off set with some light humor. Being a Guillermo del Toro film it was the sci-fi special effects that stole the show. They made the movie so much more enjoyable because the battles, which comprised the action of the film, were so well done and detailed with the effects. It wasn’t just the battles and destruction that were benefited from great special effects but the setting down to being inside the giant robot and look of the world on the brink of destruction that too looked super cool.  I will admit I found that the movie was better than I thought it was going to be and found that I did enjoy it. It was action packed with a decent story and easily holds you attention with the stunning visuals and bits of humorous scenes and dialogue.

Watch it?

Yeah, sure. It has an okay story and great special effects.

The Comedy Group

Hey Internet,

So, I went out with my friend for my bestie’s birthday. Shout out to Matt and Steven and Megan, whose quote of the day is “I don’t like a lot of people”. Well Megan I’m glad you like me so happy belated birthday, Bestie! So, it’s taken me a bit to write this review because we went to go see Grown Ups 2 and since I hadn’t seen the first one I thought I’d wait to review it till after I’d seen both and just review them at the same time.

1) Grown ups (2010)

grown_ups_ver2_xlg

Director: Dennis Dugan

Starring: Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Salma Hayek, Rob Schneider, and Maria Bello

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: After the coach of their old basketball team passes away, five friends reunite at an old beach house they used to go to as kids.

The Review: I have to admit off the bat that I’m not a huge Adam Sandler fan. I have no idea why; I mean I like some movies like 50 First Dates and Big Daddy, but just not a big fan of his still of comedy. I guess because it runs more toward slapstick, who knows. Well like I said I saw this because I saw the second for my best friends birthday. It had a very dry sense of comedy mixed with some slapstick. It started a bit slow but picked up in the second half for some laugh and concluded with a somewhat heart-warming ending.

Watch it?

It’s interesting to see those five together so complete you decision. This one’s a toss up for me.

2) Grown ups 2 (2013)

GU2poster

Director: Dennis Dugan

Starring: Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Salma Hayek, and Maria Bello

Rating: PG-13

The Plot:  Set three years later Lenny and family try to adjust to living in their old hometown his friends and their family in his crazy hometown.

The Review: I’ll admit that half the reason I went to go see this was Taylor Lautner and the second again because it was for my best friends birthday. I found that I was pleasantly surprised in that I laughed that much at the movie because going in I had no idea what to expect and after seeing the first on I will now say that I think that I liked the second better. I not only laughed more but I found that I like the plot more in this one.

Watch it?

Yeah, sure it’s got some laughs so try it out.

A Week of Cars

Hola Everyone,

So, having a little brother sometimes means I have to compromise and watch a movie that I kinda don’t want to see plus this was supposed to help me understand one of my friends when he refers to this franchise. So, Matt, yes I now know what you meant all those times you referred to breaking people out of prison with cars. I just had a week of catching up on The Fast and the Furious movies since I’ve only seen the first two and they were the only movies I saw all week because I have cousins visiting from Mexico so I was out a lot.  I will warn that it helps with these movies to watch all the way to the end of the credits for hidden scenes and if you watch them in the order of 1,2,4,5,3 and 6. It just makes a lot more sense that way. Well here it is, from Tokyo to the most recent one in theaters.

1) The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

fast_and_the_furious_tokyo_drift_xlg

Director: Justin Lin

Starring: Lucas Black, Bow Wow, and Sung Kang

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: A troubled boy is sent to his father’s in Tokyo after getting in trouble with the law and stubbles upon the racing scene.

The Review:  Ok, I will admit I was going skip this one but my friend, Matt, was insistent that I had to watch all especially this one before number six because its finally incorporated into the series. In conclusion I stuck it out for they sake of connecting the franchise. Let’s begin with the story shall we? One word: clichéd, really troubled kid gets sent to his other parent/ guardian. We’ll let that slide for now but I will say that the main character annoyed the hell out of me most of the time as well as Bow Wow’s sidekick character. Since this was still early in the franchise the character development and interaction is minimal, making the plot very thin. I understand the cars and drifting are the central focus but the lack of plot makes the film predictable and just a bit cheesy. I will credit it however on the introduction of Han, which is a character I love in the series but more on that later, and with the exceptionally beautiful cars, especially that orange and black Veilside Mazda RX-7. Geez, that car and I don’t ever like the color orange but that car is gorgeous. For those of you who have seen it there is one character’s fate I was not happy with but that’s all I’ll say before I spoil anything.

Watch it?

For the sake of the series I guess.

2) Fast & Furious (2009)

fastandthefurious4_poster

Director: Justin Lin

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, and etc.

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: Set a few years after the first, Brian, now an FBI agent, and Dom team up again to bring down a major drug lord.

The Review: Who’s glad they went back to the original storyline? Now I was really skeptical about this one because it was going back so I didn’t know where it was going to go but hey I was surprised this actually had a plot and it was character driven not just a parade of pretty cars. Sure it still had good racing scenes and great cars so it didn’t completely change.  Just got a little better at least in my opinion. It was still a little scattered in places because it wasn’t just based in LA but it still managed to fix some of the plot holes left by the first three though some times fixing them abruptly (cough Mia and Brian cough) but hey I was happy that they were fixed. So, it’s a good filler and lead into the next, not to mention I like the introduction to some new characters like Gisele played by the stunning Gal Gadot. On a side note for those who have seen this one too, why do they always give the worst fate to the characters and couples I most like?

Watch it?

Yeah, sure it has a plot that’s interesting enough and nice cars with some nice action scenes.

3) Fast Five (2011)

 fast-five-movie-poster

Director: Justin Lin

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, and everyone ever in these movies.

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: After breaking Dom out of prison when he’s convicted in the last one, Mia, Dom, and Brian are on the run and end up in Brazil.

The Review: This one has to be my favorite of the franchise and I will admit I really enjoyed this one. It was action packed with light humor that comes from incorporating everyone ever in the movies. I will admit that is part of the reason why I like it so much because the cast brought a great dynamic to the movie and I must say I love Han and Gisele with their flirty chemistry. I also liked that it was set in Brazil even though it had to do with a drug cartel but a cartel movie not set in Mexico. The cars are still fantastic but not the center of the film so it still has plot and character based so it develops a bit but the stunts are a bit exaggerated.  Lastly, Dwayne Johnson you snuck your way into this film too?

Watch it?

Yeah, why not, it’s entertaining and pretty good.

4) Fast & Furious 6 (2013)

Fast-Furious-6-Poster-570x9021

Director: Justin Lin

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, and everyone ever in these movies.

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: The team finds themselves reunited to take down a terrorist for their pardons and find Letty.

The Review: After a straight week of watching nothing but the Fast and the Furious movies, I will admit I got a little attached to the characters. Like number five, this one is plot and character based but still dips into its cool cars and street racing just set across Europe this time and like the past ones the stunts are just as exaggerated. Who cares though, its entertaining right? I definitely enjoyed this one as well and like that it was set in different place like number five. It did well in playing on the emotions of the team and I will admit it throws some curveballs at you that some I didn’t even predicted. Again not happy with the fate of one character and I don’t know why this franchise keeps doing. For those of you on Tumblr, I say they messed with my ships all through this franchise and I’m not happy. Well I do know why they do it though, the whole emotional impact to connect to your audience thing, which totally sucks by the way especially in one heartbreaking scene at the end that I just love for the emotion but hate because of what happens. All in all I liked the story and the action sequences and thought it ended in a bittersweet way and manages to connect the series to Tokyo Drift.

Watch it?

Yeah, its pretty good so give it a try.

Two Independents

Hello Internet,

The reviewing continues with two independent films on DVD and Netflix. So if you want to watch them they are available there. Sorry for the lack of in theater reviewing since right now there’s nothing on my list to watch in theaters. Fear not though I’m sure August will pick it up… at least I think it will.

Straight A’s (2013)

straight-as-2013---poster-3b43cd3

Director: James Cox

Starring: Anna Paquin, Luke Wilson, and Ryan Phillippe

Rating: R

The Plot: When an estranged brother with a lot of problems blows into town one family finds themselves examining their relationships.

The Review: Ok, so I like Ryan Phillippe but I’m not such a fan of Anna Paquin. Maybe because every time I see her I’m reminded of Sookie Stackhouse and I shack my head but that entirely aside I didn’t particularly like the film itself. I found it predictable and a thought it dragged on. All three main characters annoyed me not because they were deeply flawed but the end forgot all that very abruptly. It also had this weird love triangle thing that was awkward and brushed under the rug while Luke Wilson’s character was having a mid-life crisis that just made it seem like he was guilty and depressed all the time.

Watch it?

It can be passed up for better films but if you’re feel a deeply sentimental film that a little too slow when have a crack at it. I warn though it borders on annoying.

2) Tonight You’re Mine (2011)

MrsMiracle_DVD_Sleeve

Director: David Mackenzie

Starring: Luke Treadaway, Natalia Tena, and Rebecca Benson

Rating: R

The Plot:  Two feuding musicians get handcuff together at a music festival where they are both due to perform.

The Review: I partially love films because its like looking into windows of makes believe lives and worlds where any thing is possible but every so often there comes a time in film where some times you just find a movie that you just fall in love with. I will have to admit that I did with this one and absolutely loved it. It was what I also love about independent films: innovative, deep, and closer to being real. The evolution between the two main characters is entrancing, though I will have to admit that the beginning was a bit slow and confusing due to low and unclear audio because it is filmed very roughly in piece but other shots are stunning.

tumblr_ma2hxfher81qky35ao1_1280

The story is simple a set of people over twenty four hours with two of them handcuffed together but the connections and changes in characters are well done and clear so it doesn’t seem abrupt. All together a captivating and sweet film that lives you with pleasant feelings and a smile on your face. It was originally title You instead so if you have trouble finding the movie or album, because the music is get, try searching under that.

Watch it?

Yes, I thought it was well worth my time.

Two Bad Ones and Two Good Ones

Hi,

So, I haven’t really done anything but in theater reviews so far which is crazy since that’s not the only time that I watch movies. I decided to write this because I watch some really horrible movies lately, so excuse the ranting and the length of this review since it is four because I included two good ones. I’ll try to keep it short and I also wrote this because I decided that I have to start reviewing other movies besides the ones I watch in theaters especially since the Summer movie must sees are slowing down as the blockbuster season is ending. Let’s start with the bad and end with the good:

1) Beowulf (2007)

MV5BMTUzMjM0MTc3MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzU0ODMyMw@@._V1_SX214_

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright, Crispin Glover, and John Malkovich

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: When a word of a village being attack by a monster spreads the fearless Beowulf comes to rid the town of the evils that plague it.

The Review: Ok, let the rant begin. So, first of all why would animate something to look real when you can just use real actors? When you do that it all it does is looks like a video game.  Second that to say that was freely adapted was an understatement. Now I do hate Beowulf as an epic poem, its boring, ridiculous and way too long and the movie was no different. So, far I hadn’t had an instant where I hated the movie and the original book or story but well like they say there’s a first time for everything.  It had an awkward tone to it and ridiculous in dialogue and narrative. I mean kudos for animating the whole movie I do appreciate it from a person who has done animation and studied what it takes to do that but I found it unnecessary and distracting.

Watch it?

No, please don’t unless you like that whole bad action film type thing and in that case try it at your on risk.

2) G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

 G.I.-Joe-Retaliation

Director: Jon M. Chu

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: Taking place after the last one, Cobra is defeated and captured but his disciples are on the rise.

The Review:  First problem and don’t worry this is not a spoiler because apparently it was in the trailer: who kills off Channing Tatum in the first fifteen minutes?! Yes, I understand it was for emotional value but emotional value does not mean emotional scarring. So, if you’re like me and watched this one like you did the first one to see Channing Tatum, don’t watch it you’ll get a cheesy-dialogued Dwayne Johnson instead. Well the story was confusing and had nothing to do with the first one and the dialogue is bad and just makes the over-exaggerated action scenes worse but not ever those action scenes could make up for the fact that it made absolutely no sense since more then half the characters weren’t in the first one. I know because I checked but it was better then Beowulf. Oh, and Bruce Willis what are you doing in there again playing the retired secret agent?

Watch it?

At your own peril.

3) The First Time (2012)

 FIRST_TIME_THE_2012_TH_MLF-WW-artwork

Director: Jon Kasdan

Starring: Dylan O’Brien, Britt Robertson, and Craig Roberts.

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: Two people meet outside and their relationship evolves over a weekend.

The Review:  So, I love romantic comedy so when I stumbled upon this one I was super excited because I love independent romantic comedies even more and this one was in competition at Sundance. Yes, I going through a Dylan O’Brien summer I think but come on he’s adorable and so nerdy in the stuff I’ve seen that it makes you laugh and he’s just the same in this movie. The movie is set in high school so clichés insured but its sweet in narrative and witty in dialogue. Its get right into the character so there’s really no backstory just straight into the meeting of the characters and their development toward each other and growth as people on their own. It has a very small time frame that spans like three day so its humor plays off of that and getting older. I thought it was a good break from all the action films I’ve been watching and I love that I ended up with the really good romantic buzz feeling where you swoon a little and just makes you feel so much better. What can I say; I’m a sucker for a good romance movie. Maybe it’s the hopeless romantic in me, who knows?

Watch it?

I thought it was super cute so if you’re looking for something adorable test it out.

4) Parental Guidance (2012)

 parental_guidance_poster

Director: Andy Fickman

Starring: Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, Marisa Tomei, and Tom Everett Scott

Rating: PG

The Plot: Two grandparents take care of their estranged grandkids when their parents go on a business trip.

The Review:  I love Billy Crystal and Bette Milder! Beaches and When Harry Met Sally are two of my favorite films so I will admit that I watch this film for them. The plot was simple and nothing special but it was this duo that made me laugh especially Bette Midler. It was a sweet, heartfelt film that explores the couple’s relationship with their daughter; grandkids, themselves, and how they came to be were they are in their lives and career. It’s sad at times, funny in others and touching at other times. Now dialogue and as a whole the film wasn’t the best in the world but it was charming and entertaining.

Watch it?

Sure, it’s good for some laughs.

Disney and Depp

Hello,

New review time! I know it’s soon but I went out with my dad and brother for his birthday. Shout out and happy birthday to my baby bro! Sixteen, dude, you’re getting old. Well how we celebrate at my house is normally dinner and a movie with if you have a Lucille’s by you, you should definitely go the strawberry lemonade and food are great. So that explains why I have a review so soon.

The Lone Ranger (2013)

lone_ranger_ver12_xlg

Director: Gore Verbinski

Starring: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, and Ruth Wilson

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: Tonto recounts the story of how he met and rode with the man who would be the Lone Ranger.

The Review: I’m first going to say I’m glad Disney is branching out more and more into live action, it make things interesting and when watching this let me say I have never seen the past show so it was an entirely new story to me. Now to the movie I would have to say I found its structure first of all interesting and confusing because it was told in broken, interrupted flashbacks. It ultimately makes sense and I understand why it was told that way because it was Tonto telling the story and the narrative is told through the way his mind works. The cast was great; I mean who doesn’t love Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in everything they do? I certainly do. The film itself was witty and quirky in its humor and came mostly from Depp’s Tonto or the interaction between Tonto and John Reid. I enjoyed that but sometimes I felt that they rely a little too much one it. I understand that it was a family, all ages targeted films but sometimes the humor seemed a little awkwardly placed. As a whole I laughed immensely and the epic end fight scene was stunning in execution and accompanied by the classic theme song though like all the action in the film a bit exaggerated due to the fact that it is a legend and is portrayed with that fantastical element that makes anything possible with the larger then life characters and I must add the Hans Zimmer’s music is perfectly suited with the films every scene.

Watch it?

As a whole the film is a good pass time that will insure some laughs so if you need a kind of ridiculous, simple film give it a try.

Independence Day Double Feature

Hello Everyone,

I apologize for the lateness in my replies to your comments. I greatly appreciate all of them. For some reason my webpage was being weird and decided to deliver all of them a couple of days ago. I don’t know why and it still astounds me that no matter how long I’ve been on the Internet, the Internet still manages to baffle me once in a while. So again I apologize but to make up for it I have two new reviews for today.

 1) World War Z (2013)

 world-war-z-uk-poster

Director: Marc Forester

Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, and Danielle Kertesz

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: After an outbreak of a strange virus that is turning the dead into zombies one man must lead a team to find the origin of this unknown virus in hopes of discovery a way to find a cure.

The Review: All right, so I’ll admit I’ve been avoiding this one but my guy friends Steven, Adrian, and Kevin wanted to see it. First of all I’m not a fan of zombie movies, I really prefer vampire movies but to each their own on their favorite horror monsters. When seeing this I was already less then keen but the prospect of seeing a Brad Pitt movie won me over when my friend suggested we see it. To start off the backstory was vague on what exactly Brad Pitt did for a living. All I got was he used to work for the UN in dangerous situation but quit for some deep traumatic reason that’s alluded to but never explain or said out right. That just makes thing a little confusing. Now the premise of the film was simple; zombie pathogen infects the dead. That’s it; simple but its where they took the story that I was not happy about. For the record I did not finish the whole book because it was just not my type of read. Well I wasn’t too happy with where the narrative went because I didn’t think it was particularly the greatest way to solve an apocalypse nor was I a fan of the computerize zombies that reminded me of a video game.

Watch it?

If you like zombie movies, fine go for it but personally I think this one could have been better but it was decent.

2) Despicable Me 2 (2013)

images

Director: Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud

Voices: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, and Russell Brand

Rating: PG

The Plot: Gru is back and working with the Anti Villain League to a catch one of the most notorious villains while jugging his personal life and being a dad.

The Review: So, who absolutely love the first one? I know that I did, so when this came out I was super excited because it looked adorable. I must say that it didn’t disappoint the level of cuteness was ridiculous really. I though it was not only cute but funny and sweet. It was different then what I thought it was going to be but it was in a good way. The added Kristen Wiig character was not only funny but added a charming romance to the film. I enjoyed it immensely and would definitely watch it again. Because its just as delightful and heartfelt as the first.

Watch it?

Why not? To some it up in one word, and I know I’ve said this a lot in this review: cute.

The Google Underdog

Hola,

Ok so my reviewing has slowed down a bit because I’ve been watching a lot of T.V. and anime (don’t judge) more specifically a few of my friends suggested that I catch up on Teen Wolf. Now the show as a whole is not that amazing, entertaining but it’s no Game of Thrones but the men of that show sure are attractive. So my friends Matt and Megan said, “Let’s go see The Internship” I said “Why not a comedy with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn that just so happens to have Dylan O’Brien, ok.”

The Internship (2013)

Untitled

Director: Shawn Levy

Starring: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Rose Bryne, and Dylan O’Brien.

Rating: PG-13

The Plot: When the company they work for goes bankrupt two guys apply and get into an internship at Google.

The Review:  So, when I first saw this trailer I have to admit that I had some higher expectations for this movie. Not only do I love both Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson but also for one who’s seen The Wedding Crashers (and if you haven’t then watch it) I must say it was a bit disappointing. Sure it had its funny parts, come on anytime anyone plays quidditch it’s hilarious. Wilson and Vaughn still make a great team but the writing of the film dialogue was not as great. Now the film as a whole was sweet in theme but predictable. There were a lot of references and I did enjoy those especially the Flashdance jokes but the whole film was basically take the underdog story and apply the world of Google to it. The cast was great, nerdy and adorable especially Dylan O’Brien but all in all I did expect more.

Watch it?

I would wait till it comes out on DVD really its cute but not worth the ten dollar theater fee when there are better movies in theater.
